Karma with No Clothing! Nirvana in the Nude!

Random Nuddhism Fortune: Nudists: all natural, no additives.

There is a growing trend in Buddhism today that has been dubbed "Nuddhism." As more and more people world-wide are experiencing the benefits of Buddhist meditation, people are contiuing to adapt it in small ways to better meet the needs of our New Age in the Western world. One of these new transformations is to meditate in the nude - hence the name Nuddhism.

While the article Origin of Nuddhism should be taken very tongue-in-cheek as a humorous means by which to introduce the concept, Nuddhism should not be so quickly dismissed, as some are in the habit of doing. Across the country, individual people are meditating in the nude and finding positive benefits. And some sanghas are also beginning to be open to the idea of nude group meditation.

Benefits of Nuddhism

A few benefits of Nuddhism include:

  • It's easier to get into a comfortable meditation posture without bulky clothes
  • Having a body that is free supports a mind to become free also
  • Lack of constriction and openness fosters these same states in the consciousness
  • As opposed to orange robes or black clothes, it reduces differences in ideologies

Nuddhism is a reminder to not hide. So many times, we try to hide that which we don't like about ourselves. If we have a temper, we try to hide it under a veneer of peacefulness. If we have tremendous self-guilt, we try to hide it behind a mask of equinimity. In fact, we may unfortunately spend much, if not all of our lives... hiding. Just as a relaxed and engaged posture can support a relaxed and engaged mind, so can a free and open body, in the nude, can promote freedom and openness in the mind... a mind that doesn't try to hide the shadow, but instead sees it and accepts all parts of us just as we are. As has been said many times... "You are perfect just as you are, but you can stand to be a little more perfect."
